Legal Update - 6 October 2025
The Criminal Procedure Rules 2025 (SI 2025/909) come into force today, Monday 6 October 2025, replacing the Criminal Procedure Rules 2020. The new rules consolidate the rules made in 2020 with the nine sets of amendments made to those rules since then. The updated rules:
- Clarify the requirement to give notice when applying for a reporting restriction.
- Authorise Crown Court officers to amend the home local justice area specified in a community order or suspended sentence order.
- Update the duty to consider reporting restrictions and other reporting arrangements during trial preparation.
- Set out the procedure for taking a deposition and clarifies the steps to follow once a witness attends court.
- Revise the procedure for submitting an appeal notice in relation to certain confiscation decisions.
- Include other miscellaneous updates, such as renumbering of rules and general adjustments to improve consistency and clarity. The glossary that previously accompanied the 2020 Rules has been removed and will be published separately.
