Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Steps) (England) Regulations 2021

29 March 2021

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Steps) (England) Regulations 2021 are in force from 29th March 2021.

These Regulations revoke and replace the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020 and contain the legislative framework which will implement Steps 1-3 of the Government's Roadmap out of lockdown in England.

The provisions for each step include restrictions on a person's right to participate in gatherings, and restrictions on business and the restrictions are at their most severe in Step 1.

The restrictions on businesses include the closure of certain businesses, and restrictions on the service of food and drink for consumption on the premises of a business. All areas in England are currently in Step 1.

Linked household and informal childcare remain the same as previous.

The most important changes are that whilst indoor gatherings are still prohibited, outdoor gatherings (including in private gardens and yards) of up to 6 people, from different households are permitted and there is no restriction on leaving home as there was under the  Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020.

Please see our coronavirus document for an overview of further legislation relating to the Coronavirus.
